Matt Davies’s work is primarily engaged with the act of listening and the exploration of chance based composition. His current practice is concerned with the translation of light into sound with an emphasis on ‘Sound on Film’ techniques. He recently completed his latest 16mm optical sound film ‘Grit’ which documents a 18 mile walk along Chesil Beach in Dorset.
Past projects include ‘By the mark, the deep’ a collaborative project with Milo Newman featuring field recordings from the submerged town of Dunwich, ‘Sound Sweep’ a performance for Haroon Mirza’s show at Spike Island and ‘Oberhausen Spur’ a series of field recordings from abandoned train tracks in the industrial area of Germany for Kitev.
More recently he has been listening to the micro sounds of plants and observing their movement via time lapse photography.
Matt Davies is a member of BEEF (Bristol Experimental and Expanded Film). He regularly performed with Bermuda Triangle Test Transmission Broadcasts on Resonance FM between 2017-2019. His work is featured in the ICA’s Soundworks collection.
